Presentation Handout
Synchronous - Disregards place Asynchronous - disregards time and place

Students that can not be present physically in the classroom can be present in the classroom virtually. This can be due to personal, medical or transportation issues. Synchronous products such as Google Hangouts allow students to see what is presented on the screen and hear the instructor. With a web camera students can see the instructor. While a microphone is not required, it does make it easier for the student to follow along with the class. Students can use a chat window so a microphone for the students is not required. Because the classroom or students do not have a microphone, classes with a heavy discussion component may not be suitable for synchronous transmission. A wireless tablet with a microphone could be shared between the students. Dual screens allow easier displaying of the material.

Google Hangouts Image Google Hangouts provides a tool for students to learn and interact with the instructor or class regardless of location. Students can be at home or on other campuses. Students and instructors have access to all Google tools for free because the schools uses GMail.

To help ensure students and instructors meet in the same room consistently a permanent link is available that can be embedded into Aims Online or other web page. If a permanent link is not used, then Google assigns a link that changes. Instructors can use an invitation to advise students of the link. Embedding into Aims Online makes the sign-in process easier for the student.

Chat Window Image

Instructors can chat with students through text or a microphone. Students can use the chat window or microphone. Instructors and students can share screens. Done in a live classroom this allows students to interact with the instructor. Depending on audio settings students in the classroom may be able to hear what is said online. Repeating of questions is needed since the students in the classroom do not have microphones.

Appointment Link

There are tools to link to a public Google calendar to schedule appointmets. The school calendar is not public so dual calendars are needed to use a 3rd party program.
